Easy Chocolate Mousse Recipe With No Eggs

This easy chocolate mousse recipe is the best thing to happen to dessert night โ€” and I’m not even exaggerating! It comes together so quickly with just three basic ingredients: pudding mix, milk, and Cool Whip. You can change it up in so many ways by adding mix-ins or using different pudding mix flavors. It’s also a great filling for pies and a cool, creamy frosting for cakes. Chocolate lovers, this one is your next chocolate fix โ€” I promise!

As an added bonus, it’s easy to make low calorie, low sugar, and low fat depending on the type of ingredients you use!

What Makes This Easy Chocolate Mousse So Good

Okay, can we talk about how this is basically the easy version of a decadent chocolate mousse that everyone freaks out over at fancy restaurants? Like, traditional mousse โ€” which is a French word meaning “foam,” FYI โ€” typically involves a double boiler, egg yolks, whipped egg whites beaten to stiff peaks or soft peaks with a whisk attachment, and bloomed gelatin. That’sโ€ฆ a lot of much work! This simple version skips all that drama while still delivering that dreamy, fluffy texture and rich chocolate mousse vibes we’re all after. No raw eggs, no uncooked eggs, no double boiler โ€” just pure, creamy, gooey goodness in a large bowl. It’s the perfect egg-free recipe for when you want a classic chocolate mousse without the fuss.

This easy mousse recipe is also a great make-ahead dessert โ€” just pop it in an airtight container in the fridge and it’s ready whenever your sweet tooth strikes. I literally can’t even with how simple it is. The best texture, the creamiest texture, and zero stress. Yes, please!

FAQ

Can you add melted chocolate to Cool Whip?

Yes! This is another great method for making an easy chocolate treat using Cool Whip. There are two important steps. First, make sure the melted chocolate โ€” whether you’re using dark chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, bittersweet chocolate, or even milk chocolate โ€” isn’t too hot. Let it cool to room temperature for 5โ€“10 minutes before folding it into the Cool Whip. Second, mix in the chocolate mixture a little at a time rather than dumping it all in at once. You’ll get the best chocolate flavor and a smoother result. A tiny spoon trick: taste as you go! Good quality chocolate makes such a difference here, you guys.

What can you add to chocolate mousse made with Cool Whip?

These are some of my favorite mix-ins for an easy chocolate dessert upgrade:

  • Oreo crumbles
  • Chips Ahoy! crumbles
  • peanut butter
  • whipped cream cheese
  • dulce de leche
  • mini chocolate chips or tiny bits of chocolate morsels
  • sprinkles + 1/2 tsp almond extract + 1/2 tsp butter extract + 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (tastes like cake batter!)
  • a pinch of salt + a kiss of cocoa powder for that deep, rich vibe
  • a splash of Grand Marnier for a grown-up special occasion moment ๐ŸŠ

Can whipping cream substitute for Cool Whip?

Yes! Just remember that use of just heavy whipping cream means it doubles in volume when whipped, so you only need a half-cup of cold cream for every 1 cup Cool Whip. Beat it with a hand mixer to medium peaks, then soft peaks, then stiff peaks โ€” your homemade whipped cream will be the best whipped cream situation ever. A dollop of the whipped cream on top of your prepared chocolate mousse also makes for a gorgeous fresh presentation! See my Stabilized Whipped Cream recipe for all the deets. You can even fold a portion of the cream into the mousse mixture for extra creamy texture โ€” so dreamy!

  2. Um I love this so very much and see it in my immediate future.

Now . . . if we could only get cool whip in Australia . . .

  3. Yum! I love a simple chocolate mousse recipe!!! It looks so good–I just need to live closer to you so I can dig in right now!

  4. I’m so excited to make this for a dinner we’re hosting! Thank you! Is the Cool whip used frozen or thawed by the way?

  5. I hope you tell people it’s sugar-free before you serve this. Some people don’t like to eat poison.

    • I’ve never frozen it and then thawed it, but I have eaten it frozen (in cake form)– it was great!

You can make it a few days ahead of time and just give it a good stir before stirring.

  6. oh my gosh! Does your brother have type 1 diabetes or two? My sis i T1D and it is great to “meet” people who also live with it
