Grandma's Chocolate Trifle

Why This Chocolate Cake Trifle Is Everyone’s Favorite Dessert

Can we talk about how this chocolate cake trifle is basically the definition of a decadent dessert? Like, I literally can’t even. You’ve got those gorgeous layers of chocolate cake, silky chocolate pudding, fluffy Cool Whip, and crunchy Heath toffee bits — all just sitting there in a clear glass trifle bowl looking like the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen in your life. Be still my heart! 😭❤️ The first time I brought this to a potluck, three different people asked me for the recipe before they even finished their first serving. It is THAT good, you guys.

What makes it so ah-mazing is really the combination of rich flavors and textures working together in every single bite. You get tender crumb from the cake, creamy pudding, a little crunch from the toffee — it is just everything. And because it lives in a glass dish, those colorful layers are fully on display like a dessert work of art. What You Need to Make This Easy Dessert

Okay so let’s chat ingredients, because this easy dessert is super flexible and forgiving — which is basically my love language in the kitchen. 😂 At its core you need a chocolate cake base (homemade or boxed, zero judgment here!), instant chocolate pudding, and Cool Whip. But here is where it gets really fun: the toppings and mix-ins are totally customizable.

Grandma’s original recipe calls for Heath toffee bits, but you can absolutely swap in Skor bars, Heath bars, or even crushed toffee bars depending on what your store carries. Some people like to toss in chocolate chips for extra richness, and I have seen versions that use chocolate sandwich cookies crumbled between the layers — honestly genius. If you want to go full homemade, you could whip up a batch of heavy cream with an electric mixer until you hit stiff peaks for homemade whipped cream instead of Cool Whip. Either way works beautifully!

For the chocolate base, you can use a brownie mix baked in a 2-inch pan (so fudgy and incredible — try my Lunch Lady Brownies for a from-scratch version!) or a classic boxed cake mix. If you go the brownie route, bake according to package directions, line your prepared pan with parchment paper for easy removal, let it cool completely on a wire rack, then cut into cubes. A layer of brownie at the bottom is seriously dreamy. Use a rubber spatula to scrape every last bit of batter into that pan — waste nothing, friends!

How to Layer Grandma’s Famous Chocolate Trifle

Layering is where the magic happens, you guys! Make sure your cake or brownies are completely cooled before you start — a warm cake will melt everything and turn your gorgeous trifle into a hot (well, literally hot) mess. Once you have a completely cooled trifle base ready to go, you are in business!

Start with your base layer of cake or brownie cubes in the bottom of your trifle dish. Next, spread half of the chocolate pudding over the cake — use the back of a large spoon or your rubber spatula to get it nice and even. Then dollop on a generous layer of Cool Whip and sprinkle with Heath toffee bits. Repeat! The second round goes: remaining cake cubes, the other half of the chocolate pudding (yes, half of the chocolate pudding per layer is the move!), another swoosh of Cool Whip, and more toffee. The final layer on top should be a big, fluffy crown of Cool Whip — that top layer is prime real estate for garnishes like chocolate shavings, a dusting of cocoa powder, or extra crushed toffee bars for crunch. So pretty! ✨

Want to make individual portions instead? Layer everything in small clear cups for the most adorable single-serving situation ever. I do this for holiday parties and the whole family goes absolutely nuts for them. Similar vibes to these super fun Raspberry Biscoff Brownie Parfaits — totally obsessed.

Elevating Your Chocolate Trifle with Ladyfingers

Grandma’s famous chocolate trifle is already a sumptuous dessert that layers rich flavors and textures to delight the senses. But to elevate it a bit, add ladyfingers, which not only introduces a delicate sponge element but also absorbs the surrounding flavors, enhancing the overall taste experience. I think Grandma would approve!

Ladyfingers, known as ‘Savoiardi’ in Italian, are light and airy sponge biscuits that are slightly sweet and have a dry, crumbly texture. When used in a trifle, they serve multiple purposes. They are excellent at soaking up the flavors of the chocolate and any accompanying syrups, making each bite a harmonious blend of tastes. Their soft yet firm texture provides a delightful contrast to the creamy layers of pudding and the dense richness of the chocolate cake. They also help maintain the structure of the trifle, keeping the layers distinct and preventing things from getting too soggy. It is basically a structural and flavor win all at once! 🙌

Tips for the Best Chocolate Trifle Recipe Results

Okay real talk — I have made this chocolate trifle recipe approximately one million times and here are my absolute best tips for nailing it every single time. First: brown sugar in your cake batter (if you are doing a from-scratch chocolate cake recipe) adds such a gorgeous depth of molasses-y flavor, so swap out some of the white sugar if you can. Second: always, ALWAYS add vanilla extract to your pudding mixture — just a splash makes it taste so much more homemade and less straight-out-of-a-box. You can mix the pudding in a large bowl and stir in a teaspoon of vanilla extract before spreading. Game changer!

Third: if you want to add cream cheese to the pudding layer for a little tangy richness, beat softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth and then fold it into your pudding — it is SO creamy and dreamy, I can’t even. Fourth, melted butter drizzled over the base layer of cake cubes adds extra richness and keeps things moist. And fifth: for serving time, pull the trifle out of the fridge about 15 minutes early so it isn’t ice cold. A slightly chilled (not frozen!) trifle has way better texture and flavor. Trust me on this one! You can also make this a day ahead — a completely cooled trifle that has set overnight in the fridge is honestly even better the next day.

The Art of Serving and Presenting Your Trifle

Serving a trifle is as much about the presentation as it is about the taste. This layered dessert not only offers a variety of flavors and textures but also makes for a visually stunning centerpiece on any dining table. The beauty of a trifle lies in its layers, so selecting a clear glass trifle bowl is absolutely key. A trifle dish with straight sides lets those colorful layers show off in all their glory, making the dessert as appealing to the eyes as it is to the palate. Seriously, people will be pulling out their phones to photograph it before they even pick up a spoon!

For serving time, use a long-handled spoon or rubber spatula to reach all the layers and aim to get a bit of each layer in every portion — that is how you get the full experience in every single bite. Trifles are rich (this is a decadent dessert, after all!), so start with a modest portion. You can always go back for seconds. 😏 Finish the top layer with chocolate shavings, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, or crushed Heath bars just before serving for maximum wow factor. Grandma's Chocolate Trifle

Yield: 16
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

My grandmother's recipe for a family favorite. Layers of chocolate cake, pudding, Cool Whip, and Heath Toffee Bits make this the most incredible holiday dessert ever! We gobble this up every time my grandma sets it on the table.

Ingredients

  • 1 chocolate cake (roughly a 9x13 sized cake), baked and cooled
  • 2 packages 3.4 oz. chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 4 cups skim milk
  • 16 oz. Cool Whip
  • 1 cup Milk Chocolate Heath Toffee Bits

Instructions

  • Break up the chocolate cake into bite sized pieces in the pan. Set aside.
  • Whisk together the pudding mix and skim milk until thickened.
  • Place 1/3 of the cake pieces in the bottom of a trifle dish. Spread 1/3 of the pudding over top. Spread 1/3 of the Cool Whip on top of the pudding. Repeat for 3 layers.
  • Sprinkle the Heath Bits on top of the final layer of Cool Whip.
  • Chill for at a least an hour before serving.

Notes

  • to use any baked chocolate cake recipe you want! You could even use a store-bought chocolate cake or store-bought plain cupcakes. I like using my doctored-up cake mix recipe.
  • My grandma's recipe calls for only one 3.4 ounce box of pudding mix. But I like for the trifle to be really moist, so I like to use two boxes. I also double the Cool Whip that her original recipe calls for.
  • You can replace the toffee bits with Snickers or Butterfingers! There are probably other yummy substitutions, but those are two that I've tried and liked a lot.
