You do NOT want to miss this peanut butter moo’d recipe — a copycat Jamba Juice smoothie you can make right at home! Okay, first of all, I need to give a huge shout out to Hayley over at The Domestic Rebel for making this photo shoot happen. I don’t live near a Jamba Juice anymore, and she oh-so-generously snail-mailed me two Jamba Juice cups just so I could take pictures of my homemade version! She’s a peach, I tell ya. 🍑 My Love Story With the Peanut Butter Moo’d Recipe You guys, let me tell you about the first time I tried a Peanut Butter Moo’d from Jamba Juice. It was college. It was glorious. It was also responsible for what I lovingly call the Freshman 25 — yes, 25, not 15, not 10, TWENTY FIVE. 😂 So bad. But also so, so good. I genuinely cannot explain how a smoothie did that kind of damage, except that I was drinking one (sometimes two!) of these rich, creamy, peanut-buttery beauties every single day. In hindsight, that probably wasn’t the move, Weight Watchers would absolutely agree, but here we are and I regret nothing. Out here in the South East we didn’t have Jamba Juice back then — at least not in high school or in my little college town circa 2004 — so when I finally discovered the smoothie chains and their magical frozen creations, it was like a whole new world of desserts had opened up to me. I was immediately obsessed. Obviously, I gravitated toward the most dessert-like options on the menu. I have a type, okay? Why This Jamba Juice Version Is Actually Better Here’s the thing about making a copycat Jamba Juice version at home — you get to control exactly what goes into it! The original smoothie chains use chocolate frozen yogurt as a base, which, sure, is delicious, but it’s also loaded with added sugar. When you make this at home, you can swap all of that out for a frozen banana. One whole banana, frozen solid, gives you that same ultra-creamy, thick, almost ice-cream-like texture without any of the junk. Be still my heart — it actually WORKS. And can we talk about chocolate almond milk for a second?! I am obsessed. Using chocolate almond milk instead of regular chocolate milk keeps things a little lighter (though chocolate milk works just as well if that’s what you have on hand!). Either way, you’re getting that deep, rich chocolate flavor without needing to add a ton of cocoa powder or extra sweetener. It’s kind of magic. ✨ If you love chocolate as much as I do, you’ll also want to check out this chocolate peanut butter cake roll — another peanut butter and chocolate dream come true. What You Need to Make This Copycat Smoothie The ingredient list here is super simple and straightforward — nothing fancy, nothing weird, just real-life pantry staples. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you’re working with. You’ll need a whole banana that’s been frozen ahead of time (peel it before you freeze it, trust me on this one — frozen banana, peeled and ready to go, is the dream). Grab a cup of ice to get that thick, frosty consistency going. A cup of milk is your base — I usually use whatever I have in the fridge, but 2% fat milk works really nicely here for that richer, creamier texture. Then of course you need a big scoop of peanut butter, and a drizzle of honey if you like a little extra sweetness. Want to add a little extra nutrition? Toss in a scoop of your favorite protein powder! It blends in completely, you won’t even taste it, and it makes this feel a little more like a proper meal than just dessert for breakfast (not that there’s anything wrong with dessert for breakfast — hello, brownie batter pancakes exist for a reason 😉). A protein powder boost also nudges up the daily value of key nutrients, which I’m always here for. Tips for the Creamiest Peanut Butter Moo’d Okay so a few things I’ve learned through many, MANY rounds of testing this recipe (it’s a hard life, I know). First — freeze your banana the night before. A properly frozen banana is what separates a good smoothie from a truly ah-mazing one. It’s the difference between a watery mess and something that tastes like actual ice cream. Second — use chocolate almond milk OR chocolate milk, but please don’t skip the chocolate element entirely. The cocoa powder flavor is really what makes this feel like the real-deal Jamba Juice version. Some people even add a sprinkle of extra cocoa powder on top, and honestly? Chef’s kiss. Third — blend it long enough! You want everything completely smooth and creamy, no banana chunks, no ice shards, just pure silky chocolate smoothie perfection. This is not the moment to be impatient. Also, if you want to get really fancy (and I always want to get really fancy), top it with a little whipped cream and a drizzle of peanut butter. 😍 If you’re into healthy smoothies that still feel indulgent, this recipe genuinely hits that sweet spot every single time. How This Compares to Other Healthy Smoothies I know there are a million healthy smoothies out there, and I’ve tried approximately all of them. But this peanut butter moo’d recipe holds a very special place in my heart because it doesn’t feel like health food — it feels like a treat! You’re getting real fruit from the banana, good fats from the peanut butter, calcium from your cup of milk, and you can even sneak in some protein powder without anyone being the wiser. Compare that to what you’d get from the smoothie chains — often loaded with natural flavors, added sugars, and ingredients you can’t even pronounce — and the homemade version wins every single time. Worth noting: when you check the daily value breakdown on a store-bought version, the numbers can be pretty eye-opening. Making it at home lets you skip all the mystery additives and natural flavors and keep things clean and simple. And honestly? It tastes better. I literally can’t even explain why, but homemade always wins. If you’re on a healthier-eating kick and want more ideas, I also love these blueberry oatmeal bars for a wholesome breakfast or snack situation! Make It Your Own One of my absolute favorite things about this recipe is how flexible it is! You can swap the chocolate almond milk for regular chocolate milk if that’s what you’ve got. You can use a different nut butter if peanut isn’t your jam (almond butter is SO good here too). You can add cocoa powder for an extra deep chocolate hit. Want it sweeter? Add a little honey or a Medjool date. Want it thicker? Add more frozen banana or a little extra cup of ice. This smoothie is genuinely foolproof, and I say that as someone who has messed up smoothies before — yes, it is possible, and yes, it is embarrassing. And if you’re feeling like branching out from the chocolate smoothies universe for a minute, I highly recommend exploring some other fun treats. Like, have you ever made banana bread? It’s another great way to use up those ripe bananas! Or if you’re deep in the chocolate-peanut butter obsession with me, these salted caramel brownies are calling your name. 🍫 Go Make This Right Now! I managed a Jamba for a few years after high school (yikes!! That was waaaay too long ago! LOL). I’m not sure if the recipe has evolved over the last 15-17 years, but back then we used chocolate soy milk, vanilla non-fat frozen yogurt, peanut butter, banana & ice. And before it was a PB Moo’d it was Peanut Butter Paradise & we made it with real peanuts instead of the PB – it was faaaaaaantastic! I miss that version. Sometimes I make myself a PB Moo’d with chunky PB just so I can have those chunks again! Reply
Wow this seems super delicious. I’m going to try this smoothie tomorrow in breakfast. Can’t wait!! Reply
