Deep, dark, chocolate-y frozen hot chocolate served up in a gigantic bowl with a pile of whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top. Just like the famous frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity in NYC! This frozen hot chocolate recipe is honestly one of my favorite thing to make when I’m missing my husband or just need a little chocolate therapy, so let’s get into it.

It’s Wednesday!!! We’re halfway through the week ????????! #wednesdaygoals

Normally, I don’t mind kicking my husband and daughter out of the house every Monday morning for a long 5-day work and school week. I like being able to get things “done” (as if that ever really happens, though, right?) during the day, and to put things away just so and know they’ll stay that way for at least a few hours (as long as said things are out of toddler reach ????). I relish in a quiet house during naptime, and then I enjoy the rush of having everyone come home and be together in the evening.

But I’m always kind of sad that I have to send my husband back to work (not so much for the 6-year-old; with her, I’m always like see yaโœŒ????). Which means I’ve already texted him like 8 thousand times asking if he’s on his way home yet ????. Honestly, some days feel like their own little epic journey, and by the time everyone’s home, all I want is to curl up with something cold, chocolatey, and ah-mazing.

Maybe I’m especially missing him because I happen to have the perfect dessert for two to share with you today!

My husband and I have been to Serendipity a handful of times just because I love the frozen hot chocolate so much! My favorite location is in Georgetown in DC. It’s such a beautiful section of town โ€” honestly, it’s the type of place where you half expect to run into mystical trolls or storybook characters tucked between the townhomes, like you wandered straight into Disney’s Frozen. I think I could drive up and down the streets looking at the ornate townhomes and sweet little sidewalks forever.

Also… there’s a Sprinkles down the street, and I always need a cupcake after my frozen hot chocolate ????.

Annnnnnnnnyway. ????

Serendipity’s famous frozen hot chocolate is super duper easy to replicate at home! So if you can’t hit one of the big cities to try it at the restaurant (or you just don’t want to pay that crazy menu price!), no worries– you can make the exact same thing in your own kitchen. There’s a long-standing reputation around this dessert, kind of like Serendipity’s own version of world-famous yoga adventures, except instead of stretching your body, you’re stretching your sweet tooth to the absolute limit.

All you’ll need is some really good chocolate, a saucepan, and a blender.

This would be perfect for a sweet Valentine’s day dessert for two at home! โค๏ธ

Or… you know… for a Wednesday second breakfast. Whatever. ???? Enjoy!

Why This Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe Is Such A Big Deal

Can we talk about why this particular treat has become such a cult favorite? There’s honestly a number of historic factors that made Serendipity’s frozen hot chocolate so iconic โ€” it’s been served since the 1980s, it’s been featured in movies, and celebrities have been papped sipping it for decades. The reason people keep coming back for more isn’t complicated, though. It’s rich, it’s creamy, it’s just the right amount of chocolatey, and it feels like a special occasion treat even when you’re just making it on a random Tuesday in your pajamas.

Honestly, this is the kind of dessert that turns a totally average hot day into something memorable. It’s a perfect treat for cooling off, and it somehow manages to feel indulgent and nostalgic at the same time, like a frozen version of those hot chocolate milkshakes you used to beg for as a kid. If you love chocolate the way I do, you have to make this โ€” there’s just no getting around it.

A Few Fun (And Slightly Random) Comparisons

Okay, stick with me here because I promise this makes sense in my brain. Making this frozen hot chocolate recipe at home feels a little like going on your own epic kids yoga adventure โ€” it sounds intimidating at first, but once you get going, it’s actually simple steps all the way through, and the payoff is so, so worth it. If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll want to help blend everything together, and honestly? Let them. It’s a wonderful way to make a Wednesday feel special.

I also think about how some apps market their content โ€” you know, with those app-exclusive adventures and bonus content you only get if you join Jaime or whatever fitness influencer is trending that week. This frozen hot chocolate recipe is kind of like that, except the “exclusive content” is just a really good dessert that tastes like it came from a fancy NYC restaurant, and the only membership required is a working blender.

If you’re craving more cold, creamy desserts after this one, you might love this cool whip ice cream recipe or even these skinny frozen hot chocolate cupcakes, which are basically this drink’s adorable baked cousin.

Serving This Up For A Crowd (Or Just Your Own Family)

This recipe is written to serve two, but it’s super easy to double or triple if you’ve got enough people around to share it with. Whether you’re feeding your own family on a random weeknight or bringing a big batch to a get-together, you’ll want to have extra food and extra ice cubes on hand because trust me, people always go back for seconds. There’s rarely much food left over once this hits the table โ€” it disappears fast.

If you’re hosting, think of yourself like one of those cheerful visitor hosts at a new church โ€” greeting everyone with a warm smile and a kind greeting, maybe even passing out little name tags if you’re feeling extra fancy, and making sure every single person gets a turn with the blender pitcher. A great way to make people feel welcome is to just make sure there’s plenty to go around, and this recipe scales up beautifully for exactly that purpose.

For dessert tables, I also love pairing this with something like grandma’s chocolate trifle or a slice of old fashioned fudge pie so there’s a little something for everyone.

Seasonal Twists And Fun Variations

Around the holidays, I love crushing up candy canes and sprinkling them on top for a little peppermint crunch โ€” it’s such an easy thing to do and it instantly makes the drink feel festive, almost like a nod to Christmas in July (or December, whenever you’re actually making it). You can also swirl in some crushed peppermint bark or drizzle extra chocolate syrup over the whipped cream for good measure.

If you’re in the mood for something a little different after this, Christmas velvet layer cake with peppermint whipped cream frosting is basically the holiday season’s answer to this same cozy craving. And if your kids are begging for a fun outing after all this sugar, a trip to the dinosaur park to burn off some energy isn’t the worst idea either โ€” trust me, I’ve been there.

A Little Life Lesson From My Kitchen

I’ll admit, writing about frozen hot chocolate sometimes gets my brain wandering in weird directions, and today it wandered all the way to thinking about community โ€” like how members of your church or regulars at your favorite grocery store start to feel like family after a while. There’s something kind of beautiful about showing up on a rotating basis to the same places and building those little relationships, one own personal interaction at a time.

I even got to thinking about how a pastor might greet newcomers in such a pastoral manner, learning each person’s name and making them feel instantly at home, kind of the way I hope you feel instantly at home here on this blog every time you visit. Whether it’s your first time here or you’ve been following along since a previous occasion, I’m just glad you stopped by for this frozen hot chocolate recipe today.

Deep Thoughts, Deeper Chocolate

Okay, I promise I’m not trying to turn a dessert post into a sermon, but hear me out for one more second. Just like some topics require real reverence โ€” think holiness of the god in serious worship practices, or the weight of church discipline when addressing a grievous sin among adult members โ€” I think dessert deserves its own kind of respect too. This isn’t a solemn occasion by any means, but good chocolate is nothing to joke about either. Some things, like the elders of the church handling matters of purity of doctrine, are heavy and serious, and other things, like this dreamy frozen drink, are just here to make your day better. Both have their place.

I also can’t help but think of how computer scientists use a hash function to turn something complex into something simple and recognizable โ€” honestly, that’s kind of what this recipe does with chocolate. It takes a fancy restaurant dessert and boils it down (quite literally!) into something anyone in the United States can make in their own kitchen, no theological meat locker of complicated steps required. It’s just chocolate, milk, ice, and a blender, turning into something that feels like an absolute treasure.

Frozen Hot Chocolate FAQs

Can I use a different type of chocolate?

You can, but the results may not be as good. I really recommend using a high-quality chocolate for this recipe.

What if I don’t have hot chocolate mix?

You can either make your own mix by combining equal parts cocoa powder and sugar, or you can use another type of flavoring such as peppermint extract.

What can I do if I don’t have a large sundae glass?

You can either use a smaller glass or just pour it into a bowl. It will be harder to layer the whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top, but it will still taste great!

As you can see, this frozen hot chocolate is just like the one at Serendipity in NYC. I know that because I’ve been there and tried it myself! If you want to experience the same deliciousness from the comfort of your own home, all you need is a bowl, some milk, chocolate chips, sugar, and ice cubes. It’s so easy and definitely worth trying if you love chocolate as much as I do. Will you give it a try?
