She’s been making this best banana bread recipe for years, and it is THE BEST! Drop a star rating below after you try it โ€” I love hearing from you bold bakers!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

This easy chocolate chip banana bread recipe is moist, fluffy, and gooey with chocolate in every bite. Perfect for breakfast, snack, or dessert! You don’t need a mixer or fancy equipment โ€” just a large bowl and a loaf pan. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the recipe card and you are SO set. Honestly, the easiness of this recipe is one of my favorite things about it. Check out the recipe video in the card below for a visual walkthrough!

Using overripe bananas โ€” we’re talking ripe spotty bananas, the unappetizing brown bananas everyone ignores โ€” gives you the highest natural sugar content. That super sweetness of the very ripe bananas means you don’t need a lot of sugar to get that rich banana flavor we all crave. It balances perfectly with the bitterness of the dark chocolate chips. There’s a reason this is my only banana bread recipe I make on repeat! For more delicious banana bread recipes and banana-based desserts, I’ve got you covered.

Recipe FAQ

Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Tips

The best bananas to use are mushy bananas โ€” forgotten bananas left in a paper bag or on the counter past their prime. Rotten bananas are a no, but the blacker and squishier, the better for flavor! The right amount of bananas matters too: small medium bananas won’t give you enough moisture, so aim for 3โ€“4 large ones. Use a kitchen scale if you want to be precise. The best way to mash bananas is with a fork right in your measuring cup or medium bowl. Also: do NOT over-mix โ€” banana bread gets tough fast, and moist crumbs on your toothpick means it’s done!

Can I Make Recipe Substitutions?

Yes! To lighten it up, omit the oil and swap the egg for 2 egg whites โ€” it turns into more of a leaner banana cake texture but still delicious. You can use whole wheat in place of all purpose flour too. Swap vegetable oil for melted butter for extra richness, or stir in sour cream for a super tender crumb. For chocolate, try dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or even chopped from a good quality chocolate bar. The bitterness of the dark chocolate is dreamy against the brown sugar sweetness. I’ve tried a lot of recipes and this combo is truly the best-ever banana bread recipe situation!

How Do You Keep Banana Bread Fresh?

Store your perfect loaf wrapped in foil or in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days. For longer storage, wrap in plastic wrap then foil and freeze โ€” it keeps for a couple of months! Thaw at room temperature before slicing. You can also freeze individually wrapped slices for grab-and-go convenience. Leftover bread also makes the most incredible French toast โ€” just saying! One of the most common things people ask me is whether it keeps well, and the answer is absolutely yes. The cook time is about 55โ€“65 minutes total, so cooking time is very hands-off too.

What Can I Add to This Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe?

So many fun ways to jazz up loaf recipes! Mix in peanut butter and chopped Reese’s, toffee bits for caramel spots, or cinnamon sugar swirled in the middle of the prepared pan. A glaze totally transforms it! You could also try Banana Chocolate Chip Donuts with Biscoff Glaze or the classic Chocolate Chip Banana Bundt Cake for more banana chocolate magic. And if you’re on a banana kick, Peanut Butter Banana Cupcakes and banana chocolate chip cookies are both absolutely worth making next!

Baking Science and Quick Bread Notes

Can we talk about why this works so well? Quick bread relies on a chemical reaction between baking soda and enough acid (hello, ripe fresh bananas!) to create lift without yeast โ€” traditional baking that’s actually foolproof. Too much leavening causes collapse, so use exactly what the full recipe calls for. The free water released from mushy bananas keeps the crumb moist, which is why ripe spotty bananas are the only things that will do. Combine wet ingredients and dry ingredients in separate bowls, then fold together gently. The bold baking academy community and our team of culinary experts โ€” your kind baking concierge for uploading & non-users alike โ€” agree: this simple method produces the most delicious homemade banana bread every single time. Now go make it! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿซ
