This Muddy Buddy recipe (also known as Puppy Chow) combines two of my favorite holiday products: Candy Cane Oreos and Candy Cane Hershey Kisses! They are incredibly simple to whip up and are ready to serve a crowd in a matter of minutes!

Tonight, as my daughter and I were driving home, we passed a house that was already all decked out in colorful Christmas lights. I pointed them out to Emma, and she was duly impressed.

A minute or so after we’ve passed the lights, I notice that some sort of profound thought is written all over her face and about to spill out of her mouth. So I wait another 30 seconds. Sure enough…

“Mom?”

“Yes hon?”

“Mom. I’m gonna get the lights.”

“Ohhhh. That’s nice sweetheart.”

“Mom, go to the store. I’m gonna get the lights.”

“No, honey. We need to go home.”

“MOM! Go to the store! I’m gonna get the lights. You get the tree!”

I decided not to say anything else, and left her to her Christmas-y thoughts. Which were apparently going strong, because moments later I heard her mumble: “…I need lights.”

Fortunately, I lured her into our horrifyingly unlit house with many promises of Princess Sofia and a hot dog picnic in the living room.

But there are obviously some very high Christmas expectations to be filled this year. Ironically, this is the first year since we’ve been married that Chris and I have actually discussed “taking it easy” on the Christmas decorations. I think we’ve both reached a new level of tired in 2013, and we were both on board with “Scrooge-ing” it this year.

But it looks like Chris will be making that trip up to the attic this week after all 😉

Little does Emma know how “with-it” her mom really is on the Christmas scene. I have shelve and drawers packed to the hilt with Peppermint Oreos, Candy Can Hershey Kisses, Andes Peppermint Bits,  Dove Peppermint Bark Promises, Snowman-shaped Chocolate Covered Marshmallows, and Reese’s Christmas Trees.

I mean… if I’m not the embodiment of Christmas spirit, I don’t know who is?!

Peppermint Oreo Muddy Buddies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Candy Cane Hershey Kisses*
  • 7 cups Chex Cereal
  • 1 cup crumbled Oreos, Candy Cane or Peppermint flavored
  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. In large microwave safe bowl, heat the Hershey Kisses for 45 seconds or until melted. Stir until smooth. Add the cereal to the bowl, a few cups at a time, stirring gently and coating the cereal as you go.
  2. Add the Oreos to the bowl, and stir gently to coat.
  3. Place the powdered sugar in a gallon sized zip top bag. Spoon the coated cereal mixture into the bag. Seal the bag, and shake to coat the cereal mixture.
  4. Serve immediately or keep sealed in bag, and store for 3-4 days.

Notes

*There are quite a few substitutions for Candy Cane Hershey Kisses during the holiday season: Andes Peppermint Bits, Wilton's Candy Cane flavored melting candy, any kind of peppermint bark (Dove, Costco's, Ghirardelli), or even white chocolate melting candy with chopped up bits of candy canes (as a last resort).

Also consider substituting Mint Oreos and Mint Truffle Hershey Kises (or Andes mints) for a Creme de Menthe flavor!

Don’t miss a bite!
