Ingredients for the Cake: 3 cups all purpose flour 2 cups granulated sugar 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 2 tsp white vinegar 1 tbsp vanilla extract (or one of our recommended vanilla extract substitutes) 1 cup vegetable oil 2 cups water Ingredients for the buttercream: 1 ½ cups (3 sticks) butter 1 ¼ cups shortening 10 ½ cups powdered sugar 1 tsp rose extract for baking 1 tsp vanilla extract 5–6 tbsp milk How to Make this Recipe: Preheat oven to 350ºF. Whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Use the handle of the whisk to create three depressions in the flour mixture (two small ones and a big one). Pour the vanilla and the vinegar in the small depressions, and pour the oil into the large one. Pour the water over all of it and mix until smooth. Divide the batter evenly between 3 round cake pans (I use 8-inch) that have been lined with foil and lightly greased with nonstick cooking spray. Let the cakes cool completely before frosting them. Buttercream directions below. Buttercream Beat the butter and the shortening together until smooth and creamy. Mix in the powdered sugar 2 cups at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl in between each addition. Add the vanilla and the rose extract. Beat in a tablespoon of milk at a time until the buttercream has reached the desired consistency. Decorate with macarons, chocolate covered strawberries, and buttercream roses if desired.
