I think I’ve mentioned before how I really like famous food.
I really do.
I think everything tastes so much better when it’s famous.
All I need is one good sitcom reference or an appearance on Food Network, and I’m sold hook, line, and sinker.ย
And I’ll totally stand by it’s good name, no matter what.
Give me an old, stale Sprinkles Cupcake–
I’ll tell you it’s the best thing I’ve ever laid taste buds on.
Or a Berger Cookie that’s been shipped across the country in prime July heat–
arriving as nothing more than a pile of 3-day old crumbs and melted chocolate?
Best cookie that’s ever been made. Absolutely.
I first saw Berger Cookies on Food Network.
Duff Goldman’s favorite pie (Baltimore Bomb Pie) is made with Berger Cookiesย
(which are only found in Baltimore).
My husband noted the faint hint of raging-dessert-desire in my eyes as I watched the TV.
Months later, a tin of Berger Cookies arrived on our doorstep just in time for my birthday.
Best. Husband. Ever.
I ate the cookies.
They were a crumbly, melted, unrecognizable mess.
And utterly amazing.
I’ve done my best to duplicate them for you here.
And I’ve got it pretty darn close.
They’re not exactly the same–
but I’d be willing to bet if you shipped them across the country in the middle of July, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between my crumbly mass of cookies and the real Bergers ๐Ÿ™‚
Ok, ok– I know that’s not a great pitch.
But they’re good. I swear it.
And I happen to know that they make a great Baltimore Bomb Pie copycat…
I’d come back tomorrow if I were you ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. So sweet of your husband to surprise you with the cookies for your birthday:) They need to figure out a way to keep them intact when they ship.
        Your cookies look tasty!

        • Not really– I know they kind of have that look. The cookies are a little more cake like, but still pretty firm… if that makes any sense. And the frosting isn’t buttercream like at all. Mine is practically a ganache, but I saw some at BlueEyed Baker that has powdered sugar in it– and that kind looks pretty awesome too!

      2. They do look super delicious!!! How sad that they don’t come intact when mailed though!!! Although it is pretty awesome that your hubby saw the look in your eye and surprised you with some! Can’t wait to see the pie:-)

      3. I have to say, your hubbs gets the award for remembering your longing look and having the cookies shipped months later. A feat in itself! At least you still enjoyed the crumbled mass regardless–boo, summertime! But honestly, this cookie looks so delicate yet dense… I may need to taste test it in the very near future.

      4. I’m totally jealous he remembered months later! I mean, my husband is awesome, sweet, romantic, and giving and all, but I have to give him a list for every birthday, Christmas, mother’s day, etc., or I’ll get something I wanted 6 years ago that I no longer need or already have in the cabinet. I’ve never heard of berger cookies, but I think I must be missing out. Must google them!

      5. For anyone who has never had them, the cookie part is a very cake-like cookie. The chocolate truly resembles fudge. I am currently halfway through the first box I have had in 16 years – that arrived last night. Thus, i am already looking for a replacement recipe since our friends only go to Baltimore every three-four months!

      6. I stumbled across this while searching for a berger cookie recipe! Sorry this comment is so much later than the post! I live in Baltimore, and I think the taste might be a little off because your cookie to chocolate ratio is less… extreme, lol. Bergers are drenched in the stuff! Also- these cookies are incredibly delicate, they can barely make it home from the store in tact! There is no way they would have survived shipped anywhere.

        • By all means! Add more chocolate on top ๐Ÿ™‚ Annnnnd– I did in fact receive Berger Cookies in the mail, so….. I don’t really know what else to tell you there! They were very crumbly, yes. But still delicious! And these cookies are pretty on par with how those crumbs tasted. That’s all I know ๐Ÿ™‚

      7. Yay! I live in Baltimore & these are our favorite cookies! The price of a box of these cookies has jumped really high. I am so going to try your recipe.
You need more icing though…Berger cookies are 90% icing!
And for those of you who haven’t tried one…they are a really delicate cookie with this dreamy, fudgy icing on top. YUM-O!!
