These cookies are the subject of a longstanding urban myth that goes something like this…

A woman and her daughter ate lunch at the Neiman-Marcus Cafe in Dallas and decided to have a small dessert after their salads. They ordered the chocolate chip cookies and loved them so much that they begged to have the recipe.

Their waitress told them that the recipe wasn’t available to customers. The woman asked if she could purchase the recipe. The waitress told her that she could buy the recipe for “two fifty,” and the customer asked to have the amount added to her tab.

30 days later, the woman received her bill for that day– $289! She scanned the statement looking for the cause of the outrageous total and found at the bottom, “Cookie Recipe – $250.” The woman was understandably upset and contacted the billing department at Neiman-Marcus. They informed her that the charge was correct and would stand, because they wanted to establish the value of their cookie recipe. They said they wanted it to be something that couldn’t be afforded by all.

Outraged, the woman swore to spread this recipe to as many people as possible, so that no one else would ever be tricked into paying $250 for the cookie recipe ever again.

  1. The recipe on the Urban Myth site is the one I’ve been making since I was a little girl, except we call them Mrs. Field’s Cookies. They are absolutely delicious, but make a ton!  I’ll have to try this version soon.

  2. I didn’t know you drink zero coffee?  Wow, that is hardcore. I try to be good and am wayyyy down from where I was a few years ago but sometimes I just have to 🙂 Anyway I have ALWAYS wanted to make these cookies but your review is so candid and telling and that you just weren’t over the moon about them. Darn, I wanted you to love love them to convince me to make them! Pinned regardlesss!

  3. The other recipe from Urban Legends is one that I make all the time, with the blended oatmeal! It’s delicious! You MUST add that version to your experiment. Speaking of which, are you sick of CCCookies yet? hehe!!!

  4. Just made these cookies today! Such a nice recipe, except I changed a few things. Instead of coffee powder, I used a teaspoon of espresso powder. Because the dough was really crumbly for me, I made sure to really pack it together. Also, I would suggest baking at 350 because it was taking way longer than 20 minutes to bake! Other than that they were lovely!
