What’s in this Blackberry Praline Crumble?

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  •  1/2 cup butter (keep it cold)
  •  3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits

How to Make this Recipe

  1. Preheat the oven to 350ยบ.
  2. Whisk together the sugar and the cornstarch. Toss the blackberries in the mixture until coated well.
  3. Transfer the coated berries to a greased 8-inch baking dish.
  4. Cut the butter into the flour using a dough blender or two knives or a fork until the mixture looks like crumbs. (See the printable recipe card for note)
  5. Add the brown sugar and the toffee. Mix loosely using a fork (everything should still look crumbly).
  6. Sprinkle the crumble over the blackberries.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes. The crumble should be brown and the filling should be bubbling!

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream! The filling will continue to thicken as it cools, so it’s also really yummy at room temperature.

Make it a Pie!

When I originally posted this recipe years ago, I turned this crumble into a pie. All I did was follow the steps outlined above, but instead of baking it all in an 8-inch baking dish– I baked it all in a deep pie dish (still 8-inches) with an unbaked pie crust.

ยป Blind bake the pie crust for 5 minutes at 400ยบF before adding the fillings (and don’t forget to decrease the heat to 350ยบF).

Notes

*I used to have trouble with my crumble topping dissolving into the fruit filling until I tried this trick: scoop up handfuls of the crumble topping and press tightly in your hand to compact the mixture into one clump. Repeat this process with all of the mixture. Place the "lumps" in the freezer for 5 minutes. Gently break apart the clumps over the fruit filling. These larger clumps make the topping more "crumbly" and less likely to dissolve into the blackberry liquid.

  2. I usually prefer chocolate desserts over fruit desserts, but there is something about a warm crumble/crisp/cobbler that makes my mouth water. Top it off with some vanilla ice cream and I would gladly cheat on chocolate for a night. This looks absolutely delicious!
