Woo-hoo! Collage day!!
I’m excited to share this with you– it was so empowering for me when I realized I could still have my precious collages even without picnik!
First things first.
You have to start with a white background.
So that’s the first part of the tutorial today.ย
And, really, it’s the base for pretty much every other tutorial I’m going to post, so pay attention!
How to Create a White Background in Picmonkey:
1. Open Picmonkey.com. Click on Edit your photo.
2. Upload any standard sized photo (meaning, not one that you’ve already cropped or resized since uploading to your computer)
3. Click on Overlays. Select the rectangle shape. Make it white.
4. Enlarge the rectangle so that it covers the entire picture. Click on Merge Layers.
Voila! You’re done!ย
Save it to your desktop and name it something like “blank white.”
Then, the next time you have a collage or project to do, simply choose this photo to edit!
As long as you rename the collage/design when you save it, you won’t lose your blank white image that is saved to your desktop!

How to Make a Collage in Picmonkey:
1. Upload your white image to edit.

2. Go to overlays. Click “Your Own.” Select the image you want to use from your desktop.

3. Size the image…

4. Continue with this until you’ve added all the images you want to use.
6. When you’re happy with the collage layout, crop it:
7. Save it to your computer!

Tips/Notes:

  • ย When you insert the image into your blog post, don’t size it to any larger than Original Size (which should be plenty large enough unless the width of your post space is much larger than 700px).
  • Don’t forget you can add texts and stickers too!
  • You can also play around with the “kookiness” of the picture– they can be at an angle, or overlapping each other. You aren’t limited to a grid!

  3. So, any thoughts on why every time I try to save something on Pic Monkey it closes internet explorer? I’ve checked with them to see if there are any FAQ’s about that, but can’t find anything. I’ve updated my flash player, I have the latest version of ie, I’m confused and frustrated now, I can’t get it to work!

    • So weird! I use firefox or chrome, and those are both browsers you can download for free if you want to try that!

Or, Dorothy mentioned that they respond on their facebook page pretty quickly– you could try that?

    • Thanks, I had switched over to chrome a while back, but then switched back so maybe that is the issue. I’ll try that first and if it doesn’t work then I’ll hit ’em up on FB. Thanks for your help!

  6. I didn’t know it was possible to make collages using Picnik. I always used Picasa for collages, but I’m going to try your way because it looks like you have more freedom of shapes and sizes.
    Thanks for sharing!

  7. I’m so thankful I found your blog (via Google) this morning…………….but now I’m being naughty and spending hours making collages!! I’ve been using PicMonkey for several weeks and absolutely love it. So easy and many great options (more fonts would be nice though – but not complaining). Thanks so much for showing how to do collages this way – I know they are promising to add this later but meanwhile your way is awesome.

Ashton, quick question – I save all my PicMonkey edited images in PicMonkey folder on my Mac – not in iPhoto – it’s easier that way. By chance do you know how to delete photos from that folder…………just can’t seem to find a way to do that. Have so many there now and would like to remove some as I know they are taking up much needed storage space – and of course the original image is already in iPhoto ifI ever need it again! Thanks very much for any info. you can share.

  19. This was great, didnt know how to do this. Could you help me with something else too? When I edit a regular photo from my computer that was on my camera, If I crop it or use a border and try to print it, it comes out more square not rectangle and the border is cut off then printed. Do not know what I am doing wrong and Im new at this editing but love pic monkey. please help anyone.

    • One way to get vertical text would be to simply rotate the text. Once you’ve added the text, there should be a little cirle above it that you can use to rotate. The letters will face out instead of down, but… it’s an option! Or, just adding one letter at a time and stacking them on stop of each other— tedious, but it works.

      Good luck!

  20. Hi there ๐Ÿ™‚ Once you add the photo you want, how do you resize it? I thought the little corner things would come up where I could just drag it to make it bigger or smaller, but that is not showing up. Help!!
