Ingredients for Homemade Chocolate Syrup

Before we start cooking, let’s take a look at the ingredients we will need for this recipe. You probably have most of them in your pantry already, and they are all easy to find at any grocery store. Here is the list of ingredients for homemade chocolate syrup:

  • granulated sugar
  • unsweetened cocoa powder
  • corn syrup (or one of my Corn Syrup Substitutes)
  • vanilla
  • salt
  • water

That’s it! You don’t need any fancy or expensive ingredients to make this delicious chocolate syrup. Just make sure you use good quality cocoa powder, as it will affect the flavor and color of your syrup.

You can also adjust the amount of sugar and vanilla to your taste, or add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg for some extra spice.

A FEW THINGS TO NOTE ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

  • Youย will get some serious air bubbles in this chocolate syrup. Which doesn’t affect the taste at all, but it is frustrating when you’re trying to take pictures of it ????ย (just me?!). If the air bubbles irritate you as much as they do me, here are a couple of things I found to do that help:
    • Minimize whisking as much as possible. You’ll have to whisk some in the beginning to get those cocoa clumps smoothed out. But after that’s done, switch to a rubber spatula and gently stir.
    • Transfer the chocolate syrup to a gallon-sized ziplock bag (this is also useful for speed-cooling the chocolate syrup by placing the bag in an ice bath). Press all the air out before sealing the bag, and then simply press out air bubbles by working the bag with your hands.
    • Store the syrup in a squeeze bottle. The air bubbles aren’t as evident when you squeeze the syrup out (as opposed to spooning it out).
  • This syrup is really rich! A little goes a long way, which makes it especially cost-effective to make your own!
  • Use about 1 tablespoon of syrup to about 1 cup of milk for chocolate milk.

    • Oh my gosh, Mandy! You are way too sweet!!! Seriously.

I use a 18-55mm. It’s just the stock lens that came with the camera ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Yum! I love how dark and rich this looks! I’m like that with my gift-giving as well. My hubby can be tricky, but I can always think of a million things to get for my daughter. The real problem is narrowing it down to a reasonable amount ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I am guilty of having a bottle of the chocolate store bought syrup in my fridge (hangs head sheepishly)! But I love the idea of making my own to have in a jar! And these are crazy awesome pics girl!!!

  3. Are you serious?? My kid goes insane for chocolate milk and you’re telling me I don’t have to buy that crap anymore? This looks too good to be true. Too easy. It’s getting done!

Also, I found it funny how your daughter turned 3 and your husband turned 30 a few weeks later. My son and I are on the same cycle. He turned 3 in March and I turned 30 in April. Find something good for your hubs! If he’s like me, the big 3-0 will take an emotional toll on him. Happy Birthday to the little one!

  4. This looks so wonderful and I’m so glad I don’t have to drink chemicals anymore! I was wondering how long it keeps in the fridge?

  5. I’m making this now…. Do I store in the fridge after? And how long do you think it would be good for?

    • I like keeping it a room temperature! I’m not sure how long it’s good– ours has been in the pantry for 3 weeks now…

  6. I just made homemade chocolate syrup or the first time yesterday! I used a similar recipe – the only difference was no corn syrup. I love your photographs on this post!

  7. ARGH! I just bought two bottles of the stuff – my daughter LOVES chocolate milk or hot chocolate. I cannot wait to try this instead! It will make great gifts as well. Can you please update when you figure out how long it can be stored (either refrigerated or not). Thanks!

  8. Your photography is STUNNING!! I have been a photographer for thirty years and the first thing I noticed about this article was the incredible photography. Maybe a new career is ahead for you??

I was just looking to make a chocolate syrup to go with my mochas every morning rather than using powder. Thanks for the recipe.

  9. This looks ahh-mazing!! Can you tell me approx. how many oz. or cups this recipe yields? Also, did you ever find out the approx. expiration or was it gone before it went bad? ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m trying to decide if it would be possible to can it in order to extend the shelf-life. I’m a little leery of canning things with a low acidity because I only have a standard canner, not a pressure canner. I’m just thinking though, what great Christmas gifts this would make!

    • I fill an old Hershey’s Syrup bottle, and usually still have about 1/4-1/2 cup that won’t fit in the bottle…. sorry, that’s the best I can tell you! And we’ve yet to have it go bad yet! We keep it in the fridge. But I imagine it lasts for a looooonnnnnggg time, just based on the ingredients. There’s really nothing there to “go bad” anytime soon!
